The MAISA units in writing follow the instructional format of the Reading and Writing Project units that were created at Columbia University in New York. You probably know them as Lucy Calkins units.
The Units of Study take students through a year of writing that intensely focuses on personal narrative, persuasive and informational writing. The lessons also translate easily to Wyoming's
instructional model.
Our Opening is their Connection and Teach.
Our Engagement is their Active Engagement.
Our Application is their Link and Independent Practice.
Our Reflection is their Share.
There are two additional pieces in the Units. The first is Launching. Launching refers to establishing solid of expectations of what will happen during the writing block. Student mastery of Launching sessions is absolutely critical.
The other additional piece is called the Immersion Phase. A week or two before beginning the work in personal narrative, students will be reading and listening to and discussing personal narrative books. Before they are writing persuasive pieces they are reading, hearing, examining book, movie, restaurant and product reviews. And of course, they are waist deep in informational text and examining features and text structures before they begin their informational work.

Play is the work of childhood.
Knowing and capitalizing on that is a strong incentive to make games a strong element in your math instruction. Fluency is connected to practice, so increase practice time in your classroom following the Application piece of the day's lesson with playing cards. Kids won't know or care that they're practicing, and your independent students gaming will free up time for your intervention with the students who need one more listen and try.

Kids love to collect. What kid or adult for that matter doesn't have a collection of something they treasure. A personal number scroll is a collection of numbers that represents perseverance, learning, pattern recognition and achievement. Scrolls counting by ones, fives, tens, or sixes reveal patterns that occur in numbers and help with later with multiples, finding common denominators, common factors, and strong concepts of place value. The outside observer might see "busy work" but teachers know there is much more happening inside than what appears on the surface.
What is an interactive?
Interactive media works with the user's participation. The media still has the same purpose but the user's input adds the interaction and brings interesting features to the system for better enjoyment. Interactive sites are a great way for students to practice in a game like format. A child's work is play and interactives invite learning through play.
